Shōgetsu was the artist for a small book of flower and bird pictures entitled Shinsen Kachō Gafu (i.e., Picture Album of Newly Selected Flowers and Birds) which was published in 1897. At that time this book was unusual because it was intaglio-printed (i.e., designs incised into a metal plate) instead of woodblock-printed (i.e., designs carved on a block of wood). The traditional method of woodblock printing was less cost-effective than intaglio printing for books so by the 1920s it was only used by artists making individual art prints.
